The new Mercedes EQE SUV, one of many vehicles on our electric car hire fleet, is an exceptionally interesting large electric car, from a manufacturer increasingly finding it’s own in the electric car categories. E.V.s are no longer niche, but the approach of many manufacturers towards the electric side of their offerings is to simply rip out the engine, bolt in some motors and swap the colour of some of the trims to green or blue.
Mercedes however, have gone down a different route with their ‘EQ’ badged offerings. Their petrol/diesel and hybrid car range runs side by side with their electric range, however (ignoring the EQA for a moment), they’re entirely different vehicles, built as equivalents from the ground up. The S-Class for instance is the standard extra large super luxury cruiser, the Mercedes EQS is the electric, extra large super luxury cruiser and apart from the ‘S’ designation, they share pretty much nothing else, giving Mercedes two shots at attracting the same audience.
This brings us to the EQE SUV – while it isn’t, strictly speaking, an electric GLE, it’s just the same size and aimed at the same buyers as the GLE. And it’s brilliant!
We’re great fans of the ‘regular’ Mercedes EQE – the large electric executive saloon. The EQE SUV, being the AWD version, is unsurprisingly, similarly equipped and sharing many features, as long as having the ‘look’ that’s shared amongst Mercedes’ EQ models. It’s just taller, with a more ‘off-road’ look.
You expect any Mercedes to be designed with elegance, to be engineered with precision and to have the kind of technology that NASA would give their right rocket to get hold of and in this regard the EQE SUV does exactly what it should.
The regular EQE has been described as being a decade ahead of it’s time and the SUV variant could well be similarly described. On the outside, it’s sleekness is unmistakeable, but on the inside, it’s a sheer vision of the future. All the cabin surfaces are bathed in the glow of the wraparound ambient lighting, which can be selected from a wide array of solid colours, mutiple lighting themes and even dynamic lighting which changes in accordance with your driving.
There’s also an ambient soundtrack, which gently hums away in the background just to lt you know the car is on and which also adjusts to your driving in a way that just ‘feels’ right and makes you EQE SUV seem less like a car and more like a living, breathing machine enveloping you as you drive. It’s a terribly engaging experience and anyone who tries to claim E.V.s don’t have a soul has never tried one of the Mercedes EQ range which feature these characteristics!
With huge screens, glossy materials, metallic and carbon fibre surfaces as well as luxury seat coverings, there’s no avoiding the sheer feeling of high-tech’ opulence. Mercedes have maintained a balance between touch controls and ‘proper’ buttons, however, if you don’t feel like pressing anything, there’s either a steering wheel control, or wake word “Hey Mercedes” and you can simply talk to your car. Whether you want to set the ambient lighting to purple, define a climate control temperature, navigate to a destination or even open the tilt and slide panoramic sunroof, just say it and your EQE SUV will happily oblige!
In just a handful of years, EV’s in general have come on a long way and Mercedes in particular have made massive strides in terms of charging speed and battery energy density. Range anxiety is rapidly becoming something that on drivers of older EV’s suffer from as quick charging speeds and seriously good electric ranges are fast becoming the norm!
As ever though, there’s always going to be an interest in the speed and the range of even modern EV’s like this one. Happily, the EQE SUV doesn’t disappoint. Powering from 0-60 in a 6.6 second sprint, with up to 340 miles of range and capable of being charged at up to 170kW, giving you, on a suitable charger, 130 miles of range in as few as 15 minutes.
A strong showing from Mercedes and a worthy addition to your business fleet, company car park or driveway!
