The Transporter T7 is the latest iteration of a design classic that’s served as a premium alternative to the all conquering Ford Transit Custom and has been a surefire winner amongst our van hire customers. The new Volkswagen Transport T7 however doesn’t just present as competition to the most popular medium van on the UK’s roads, it borrows all the best bits and spruces them up with VW’s own prestige polish.
Now that VW have saved a whole bunch of development costs, it’s not surprising that the price gap has narrowed significantly between the Transporter T7 and the MK8 Custom, to the point where the VW, in some circumstances manages to be a bit cheaper. However this isn’t mere badge engineering à la the multiple Stellantis brands. The new Transporter has numerous unique design elements, features and flourishes to set it apart from it’s blue collar sibling and set it apart as still being a premium offering.
Inside however, there’s no escaping the shared parentage, which is no bad thing – the Custom is and has always been the industry leader for a reason, so if ever there was a rival to borrow from, it’s the Ford. What VW have done though is to add their feeling of logical design and a bit of class, as well as the trademark practicality seen in previous Transporter and Crafter models. There are enough differences beyond mere changes in materials and colours, to show that VW have done far more than a copy/paste excercise.
The incredible tech of the new Custom is still present and beautifully functional, with the huge, asymmetrical double screen layout, but the display visuals have been tweaked to give users the distinctive Volkswagen look and feel.
For their new vehicles and new design language, VW have dispensed with the trim level designations with which die-hard dub fans might well be familiar. Startline and highline etc have given way to entry level ‘Commerce’, rising to mid-point ‘Commerce Plus’ and ‘Commerce Pro’ denoting the top trim level.
Entry level doesn’t mean austere though, even the base level Transporter T7 is exceptionally well equipped, so you’re never going to feel like you’re slumming it in a Transporter.
Volkswagen have apparently learned from their ill-advised fling with touch sensitive controls (in the Mk8 Golf and others) that physical buttons have a place, so the steering wheel and other dash controls have reassuring tactile and clicky switches as opposed to the vague feeling, glossy, capacitative controls they’re tried previously.
We’re the home of the very best commercial vehicles of all shapes, sizes and brands, to the new VW Transporter T7 is, naturally, a part of our every growing van hire fleet. We don’t do base spec’ howeve and even the higher tier specifications receive a generous selection of hand picked options, in order to make sure our vans are always a cut above.
As ever, the new Transporters are available in not just a range of equipment levels, but across a range of rental and lease options too – just perfect for however you and your business need to run your fleet. Just like a certain creme egg – how will YOU rent yours?
