The latest reworking of the VW Tiguan didn’t need to do anything drastically new in its 3rd generation. Already, the MKII was Volkswagen’s most popular car, and as ever, a hit with our car hire and car lease customers, so it wasn’t doing anything wrong – if there’s no reason to re-invent the wheel, the safe option is to keep it round right? Not according to VW!
Big changes to such a successful formula in a wildly competitive niche are always a bit of a gamble, but rest assured, what the outgoing Tiguan did so well is still done well in the third gen’ version. Namely it’s big, but not too big, comfortable, well equipped and benefitting from VW’s brand appeal. Moreover, it’s easy to drive, has plenty of presence and is both quick and well balanced enough to have a bit of fun throwing it at the corners…. when the kids aren’t in the back, of course!
What’s New In The MK3 2026 VW Tiguan?
In the next generation VW Tiguan, there have been a number of updates. Pretty much as you’d expect when any vehicle is given a complete reworking. The drivetrains still come in petrol and diesel, but there are no prizes for guessing that there are now hybrids too. In this case, it’s a petrol electric plug-in-hybrid system that’s been added to the options, badged as ‘ehybrid’ and this is the version we’ve chosen for our car hire fleet (in top end R-Line trim) as it drastically reduces the C02 output (38 g/Km, with knock on effects for vehicle tax – perfect for company car hire users). This also increases the power output (0-60 in around 8 seconds), as well as returning fantasy-land official MPG figures – you won’t get the official 703.5 mpg, but what you WILL get is massively impressive fuel economy, which combined with an all electric range of over 70 miles, translates to small hatchback economy from a big chunky cruiser.
On the outside, the new VW Tiguan definitely looks the part. Its road presence provides confidence to the driver, making it imposing but not intimidating for other road users and it’s a handsome machine – the kids won’t make you park it round the corner on the school run and you’ll be driving slowly throught eh company car park making sure everyone gets a good look!
Very much on trend, the front and back also feature full width lightbars and illuminated brand logos to make sure everyone knows you have the new one.
Inside however, is where the updates really make themselves known. Spacious, well laid out and comfortable, with plenty of space to store things and plenty of USB-C sockets all over the place to make sure your passengers can keep themselves entertained.
There is, of course, a giant touchscreen infotainment system, which is responsive and logically laid out and features VW’s very latest software and user interface, however, there are still plenty of old fashioned mechanical buttons to make sure the essential functions you need can be selected without taking your eyes off the road or navigating through a sea of menus. The rotary selector in the middle of the dash is a nice, tactile touch too! No sign of the touch sensitive non-switches that plagued ‘that’ particular Golf’s steering wheel a year or two back!
You can’t beat a bit of ambient lighting for a bit of late night pizazz and the VW Tiguan has plenty of lighting moods from which to select. Multiple driving modes, heated seats, climate control, satellite navigation, lane keep assist, radar cruise control, all round sensors and a reverse camera are all the sort of features that won’t raise an eyebrow these days, you pretty much expect them, but the massage seats? You’ll definitely appreciate those!
