Polestar 4

Polestar 4 Electric Coupe

The Polestar 4 is a bit of a breath of fresh air. While the relentless tidal wave of aggressively priced, really quite good and very well equipped E.V.s from China are suddenly everywhere, Polestar have been doing what they’ve done since fully splitting off from their previous iteration as Volvo’s high performance sub-brand and showing that Performance, Premium and European doesn’t have to mean ‘German’. We think it’s going to be really popular for those seeking something a bit different from their company car hire options.

Volvo have long since shed their image as the super safe brick on wheels your Grandad drove. They’re still super safe, but their design and appeal have been massively improved in recent years. Polestar have inherited this, but just made it even faster and more luxurious. Which brings us to their latest machine. The Polestar 4.

In typically Scandinavian fashion, Polestar’s naming convention isn’t as 123 like BMW, or ABC like Mercedes, (with each progressive character in sequence belonging to a bigger vehicle. Instead, Polestar’s numerical designations simply show the order the car model was released in, not the size. Their next car, whether it’s a super-mini or a colossal SUV will almost certainly be the Polestar 5.

What’s the Polestar 4 Like?

Anyway, on to the car itself. The Polestar 4, depending on how you look at it, is either a massively oversized hatchback, a low slung SUV or a tall Coupe, but you ARE going to look at it. Because it looks fabulous.

From the outside it just looks super sleek and simply oozes class. There’s the distinctive ‘Thor’s Hammer’ light cluster at the front, pop out door handles and lots of very subtle and sculpted styling features, but probably the most unusual design choice is the lack of a rear window. There’s a camera instead.

Inside however, the Polestar 4 is a vision of understated luxury and minimalist yet functional design. Also, it’s HUGE. There’s masses of space in the back, masses of space in the front and even a particularly large boot. A distinctive advantage of an all electric drivetrain and a large bodyshell. Even the rear seats electrically recline – all the bette to get a good look at, or through, the full length panoramic sunroof, which can be electrochromatically tinted to make it either transparent or opaque at the touch of a button.

The sheer quality of the materials used throughout the interior allows the Polestar 4 to tell a story of luxury without necessarily having to shout about it. Once again, in a typically Scandinavian fashion, the materials used throughout are ethically sourced, renewable and/or recycled, showing that social value needn’t sacrifice style.

If you DO however want to get a bit loud, the Harman Kardon sound system will deliver your soundtrack of choice with crisp clarity and enough bass for you to feel it in your bones.

Like pretty much everything these days, many of the car functions are connected to a giant, centrally mounted touchscreen. It’s crystal clear, logical and responsive. Interestedly, the ambient lighting settings are based on colour schemes derived from various bodies in the solar system.

With all that style aside, you probably want to know how it drives. The Polestar 4 doesn’t disappoint. Not even slightly. The All wheel drive version sticks to the road like glue and it needs to with the massive power and torque at its command. Accelerating to 60mph in less than 4 seconds, it has a turn of speed that’d be frightening if was in a car that didn’t inspire such confidence. It’s all controllable and kept well in check by Polestar’s numerous safety systems. The 4 also comes with a large battery and the best part of 400 miles of range. It can charge quickly too.

There’s much to recommend this intelligent, thoughtful and luxurious machine as a genuine alternative to top end sport EV’s like the Porsche Macan or similar. For those who want something that’s capable, quick, comfortable yet understated, the Polestar 4 won’t disappoint. Truly a magnificent and modern car.
