Peugeot e-Expert

peugeot e-expert, electric van hire

Electric Vans are no longer a niche novelty and as the technology which powers electric vehicles of all sizes and shapes advances in leaps and bounds, the vehicles themselves have improved massively in a very short amount of time. The Peugeot e-Expert is by no means the first in our electric van hire fleet, but it’s an absolutely solid choice boasting a usable, predictable range, useful payload and surprisingly good driving dynamics.

As the name implies, the Peugeot e-Expert is visually almost identical to the popular Peugeot Expert and just like its diesel powered counterpart, shares a platform with other mechanically identical vans from the PSA Group. The Toyota Proace Electric, Vauxhall e-Vivaro etc.

The advent of electrification has done much to change how we think about vans and what we expect from them. The way electric drivetrains deliver power is different to that of petrol or diesels and suits commercial vehicle applications particularly well with smooth power delivery and masses of torque from a standing start. This is no less apparent in the Peugeot e-Expert and while many vans are ordered for fleet use by fleet managers who will probably never drive them, the drivers who spend their days running round in a Peugeot e-Expert will certainly appreciate the effort that’s gone into the interior. You don’t really expect a van to be refined, so when you find one that is, it’s a welcome surprise.

As with many vans these days, the difference between driving a van and driving a car is pretty academic, the driving experience is more or less on par and anyone who’s never driven a mid sized commerical vehicle before won’t have any difficulties jumping in the driving seat. The e-Expert also benefits from the full gamut of touchscreen infotainment and all the smartphone connectivity and other features we’ve now come to expect from such systems.

Driving An Electric Van

Electric vans like the Peugeot e-Expert are especially easy to drive thanks to, as with all electric vehicles, having no clutch, or indeed any gears to worry about. The pedants will remind you that ‘technically’ it’s not an automatic (automatic vehicles change your gears for you, electric vehicles have no gears to change), but you drive them in the same way. What you DO have is a drive selector. With neutral, drive and reverse which work as expected. There are also drive modes – ‘normal’ which you’ll probably spend the most time in, ‘sport’ which DOES add a bit of extra shove at the expense of range and ‘eco’ which limits your power to eke out extra range. There’s also an extra control to increase the regenerative braking so that slowing down transfers more power back into the battery. Power delivery is smooth and the e-expert makes for an exceptionally relaxing drive for a commercial vehicle.

Why Does Renting a Peugeot e-Expert Make So Much Sense

In our view and probably in the view of your accountant, renting a brand new vehicle is so much more cost effective than buying one. This is especially true for electric van hire. Prices have come down massively as electric vehicle uptake has increased, but where a conventionally powered version exists, the electric variant will usually be quite a bit more expensive. If you rent though, the purchase cost isn’t your problem, nor is any uncertainty over the re-sale price.

With electric vehicles like the Peugeot e-Expert currently enjoying massive tax advantages in addition to the benefits of hire, it makes running them on a business fleet hugely cost effective. Obviously there’s the non existant road tax, the 2% benefit in kind company vehicle tax, as well as the super low cost of ‘filling up the tank’. If your home or business has electric chargers installed, you’ll pay next to nothing per mile when compared to petrol or diesel. And you’ll never having to visit a petrol station ever again.
