Wigan Athletic vs Manchester United 2024-07

The Mighty Tics take On Manchester United

Last night, January the 8th 2024, was a spectacular evening of football as Latics welcomed near neighbours, Manchester United to our very own world class D.W. Stadium in the heart of Wigan, as part of the FA Cup’s third round. And what a game it was!

On paper, a Premier League side, fielding at full strength should have utterly dominated a team of young players a couple of leagues below them in the rankings. On the night though, the story was very different indeed.

Playing to a packed, thoroughly sold out arena, the Latic’s lads showed no sign of the pressure a high profile game like this must surely have put them under and demonstrated skill, composure and class as they made the World famous team from Stretford work exceptionally hard for both of the goals they ultimately managed to slip past. We couldn’t be more proud of our young stars, who gave their all and performed magnificently.

This bodes exceptionally well for the future of our local champions and the whole team can hold their heads up high for the way they played and for making Manchester United, a World famous mega-team struggle to scrape the win.

The support from a packed stadium of dedicated Latics fans was unrelenting all the way to the last minute of the game and despite the loss, the atmosphere was absolutely unreal.

The Wigan Athletic team goes far beyond the players on the pitch and we have to recognise the challenges of managing a colossal event at a packed the rafters stadium, which the security, commercial, events and hospitality teams at the D.W. took entirely in their stride, treating home fans and visitors alike to the warm Wigan welcome you can only experience here in this glorious Town of ours. A Magnificent effort by all involved.

In attendance were several of our own, including our very own MD Chris Melling, with his daughters and esteemed guests, pictured below taking a moment to grab a photo with Westwood Motor Group’s own sponsored player and deserving winner of the evening’s Man of The Match award Sam Tickle.

Young Jack Cowan, one of our Rental Executives came up a winner in the raffle and was absolutely delighted to take home a signed shirt to add to his growing collection.

All in all, an absolutely fantastic evening was had by all. While the game didn’t result in a win, Latics took away so many positives from the game that a mere couple of goals conceded don’t seem quite so important and we’re filled with hope and excitement for the future of this incredible team we’re all filled with pride to be able to call our own.
