First Look At The New VW Transporter

The Volkswagen Transporter is a bit of an icon, so a New VW Transporter is a big deal and Volkswagen have just given the world our first glimpse at the forthcoming T7, made, somewhat controversially, in collaboration with Ford and sharing a platform with the just released 2024 Transit Custom.

This isn’t the first time Ford and VW had platform shared – the newly released models of their resepvtive pickups, the Ranger and Amarok also share a co-developed platform and look pretty similar too. We’ve already seen the new Custom, but first impressions of the new VW Transporter reveal that the designers haven’t completely cribbed Ford’s homework on the look of the new medium size VW van.

The Evolution of an Icon

We said above that the Transporter is as iconic as a mid-sized van could possibly be, so there’s a lot of expectation already heaped on VW’s shoulders when reimagining a vehicle with so much heritage.

With almost a cult following and a favourite with, fleet buyers, private owners and campervan converters, it’s quite a bold move to co-produce a van with number one competitor; Ford – whose Transit has been the number one selling van in the UK every single year for several decades. Whether this results in the custom being regarded as ‘more premium’ or the Transporter being regarded as ‘more mainstream’ by association, remains to be seen.

Check out VW’s just released reveal CGI video below showing the pre-production Transporter alongside its ID Buzz and Multivan stablemates, still sporting the silhouette-masking pixellated paintwork, which at least partially disguises, probably on purpose, the lines of the new VW Transporter, the T7 strike an intriguing shape and we can’t wait to see more of it.

What We Know About The New VW Transporter

While the final details are still to be announced, we do know that the new VW Transporter will be available as a pure diesel, as a hybrid and also, unsurprisingly as a fully electric van.

Like the outgoing model, there’ll be a standard panel van, a crew-cab as well as a 9 seater minubus variant. Naturally, manual and automatics will also be available. The line drawings at the end of the video hint that there will be the usual two lengths as well as two heights to choose from, but interestingly, it seems a double cab pick-up variant will be included in the range, which is definitely new, as well as potentially putting the new VW transporter in competition with the Amarok as a premium badged pickup.

You can rely on us, as ever, to stock the absolute pick of the Transporter range on release and to keep ourselves updated on the latest developments with this eagerly anticipated new VW!
