The VW Transporter is an iconic van with a hard earned an well deserved cult following. If ever there was a ‘premium’ super desirable medium sized van it’s the Transporter and as a result it’s a firm favourite amongst our van hire customers as well as being highly prized in the aftermarket by camper van conversion specialists too.
Much of the appeal of the VW Transporter as a camper van conversion can be traced back to the original VW campervans Kombi vans and bay window/split screen buses – The Transporter is a multi-use, multi purpose van that was great quality, stylish and is easy to drive. The Transporter isn’t as cheap to buy as its predecessors, however, it’s still everything else they were, which is why it makes so much sense as a rental vehicle.
The VW Transporter comes in a number of configurations, but by far the most common we buy for our van rental and long term van hire customers is the VW Transporter Highline, generally with a higher output engine and a choice between six speed manual or DSG Automatic, standard length or longer length, panel van or 5/6 seat crew cab and various other variants.
As the years have gone on, vans of all marques have become increasingly car-like in terms of handling and creature comforts. The very latest VW Transporters (the recently facelifted Transporter 6.1 or T6.1) carry much of the equipment and comfort from Volkswagen’s range of passenger cars, even some of the more premium materials on some configurations.
Common features on the variants we have include built in sat-nav, all round parking sensors, some with parking cameras, radar cruise control, lane keeping assist, climate control and a number of other high end, quality of life features to make driving the Transporter a breeze.
Volkswagen Transporter – Arguably The Best Handling Van In Its Class
The VW Transporter, in terms of driving dynamics and desirability, is at the top of the medium van class, however, it has stiff competition in the form of the ubiquitous Ford Transit Custom and the stylish Renault Trafic, both exceptionally good vans (also available at Westwood) and while not having the brand appeal, are equally as competent in all other respects.
In order to stay ahead, it’s not good enough to merely rest on the laurels of badge snobbery, Volkswagen has to work hard to make sure its iconic medium sized van lives up to its legend. Thankfully, by and large, the Transporter has the sweetest handling in its class, backed up by solid build quality and exceptional design.
It’s not only handling, but general refinement that is very much evident in the Transporter. Vans are larger and taller by their nature, so wind noise and road noise are always going to be noticeable, especially at speed. The VW Transporter does a far better job than most by damping both down. The crosswind assist, originally in the much larger VW Crafter is a great feature, which, as the name suggests mitigates the effects of buffeting by crosswinds on exposed routes, something you really only appreciate once you’ve experienced just how well the system works.
The car-like driving dynamics, the car-like equipment and the sheer practicality of the Transporter have won it much favour in 5 and 6 seater crew cab variants, as a van that’ll do double duty as a large family car, or as a genuinely classy alternative to an SUV.
