When renting a van from Westwood, you need no extra licences or tests to be able to drive or hire one. This is included in your Category B licence when you pass your standard driving test
Category B Licence Explained – What Can I Drive?
Passing your standard basic driving test enables you to require your Category B Licence which means that as a driver you are qualified to drive any form of vehicle with a weight up to 3500 KG carrying a maximum capacity of 8 passengers
Some high roof vans such as Lutons or extra long wheelbase vans can weight more than the specified maximum amount of over 3500 KG so check your licence to ensure that you are qualified to be able to rent and drive these vehicles before you attempt to hire. You can always call the office with any query on this and our rental team will be more than happy to help and advise you on the procedures to follow
What Age Do I Need To Be To Rent?
As the driving licence allows 17 and upwards to drive vehicles up to 3500 KG, rental companies don’t always allow the hire of vehicles to under 25 year old’s. At Westwood, we don’t hire to under 21 year old’s unless authorised through management under exceptional circumstances
Please remember that when driving a van for the first time ensure room for the longer turning circumference and changes in the position of handbrakes and gear sticks. The weight will also be a lot heavier meaning more room for breaking distance is required, even in dry normal conditions. Some vans don’t have rear view mirrors meaning you will have to rely solely on your wing mirrors to see behind you. Most of the models we hire are new and up to date and are fitted with parking sensors but be sure to ask and double check on the model you’re hiring
Please listen to the rental team telling you how high the vehicle is that you are hiring, as it is the hirer/driver responsibility if there is any damage through not taking due care and attention to height restrictions. One to mention is Miry Lane in Wigan which stands at 15’00”, if you are in a Luton please avoid this route as you will damage the vehicle and may hurt yourself – and you will be liable.
